Both tools build whole apps, so design quality now competes with data, auth and deploys for attention. How to keep the look from being an afterthought.
Lovable and Bolt (by StackBlitz) sit one step beyond component generators: you describe an app and they scaffold front end, routing and, through integrations such as Supabase, a backend. Bolt runs the dev environment in the browser on StackBlitz's WebContainers. The design question changes accordingly: the model is juggling schema, auth and deploys, so visual decisions get made by default unless you make them first.
A notable change this month
On 8 October 2026 Lovable's changelog removed the three "design directions" it used to show before the first build of a visually open-ended prompt. It now derives the look from your description and asks about colour, typography and layout only when the prompt leaves them open. In practice: your prompt is now the art brief. If you don't write one, you get the default.
Front-load the look
-
Open with a style paragraph before any feature list: palette, type, radius, density, one reference site.
-
Ask for a static UI pass first, with fake data, and approve it before wiring the backend.
-
Keep a
design.mdor similar guideline file in the project and tell the tool to follow it on every change. -
After each feature, check the new screens against that file; drift creeps in one screen at a time.
When to pick which
Use these tools when you need a working prototype with real data paths fast. Use a component generator (v0, Magic Patterns) or hand-built code when the deliverable is a polished interface inside an existing codebase. Many teams do both: prototype the flow in an app builder, rebuild the final UI with their own system.
